Wednesday and Thursday we are having high tea. Each student comes dressed as a character in Great Expectations and brings a food item. This is a fun event. For the first part of the hour we stay in character, eat, and use the manners of the Victorian period. Monday we are continuing with Shattering Glass and Friday we are working on poetry. For homework they will have a poem to consider and the literary terms vocabulary mentioned last week.

Advanced Ninth grade continues to work on poetry as well as reading Shattering Glass (we only have a classroom set) in class. This week they are to define the following literary terms and create or find an example for each. Last weeks words were Oxymoron, Alliteration, Assonance, Allusion, and Imagery. This week the words are Personification, Metaphor, Simile, Symbol, and Onomatopoeia. Also, Tone, Hyperbole, Detonation, Connotation, and Understatement. Next week the words are Stanza, Rhyme, Iambic Pentameter, Irony, and Idiom.

The ninth grade class is done with Shattering Glass and is taking a written test and finishing projects that go along with the book. At the end of the week they are continuing to work on quilt pieces that go with Richard Wright's haikus.

In the advanced class this week we are starting poetry. The students have to bring a poem from the Poetry 180 web site that they like Tuesday. We will share poems, work on literary terms, and continue to read poems I select in class. On Friday i am having the students begin reading Shattering Glass in class. This should take about three days. Following this we will compare Lord of the Flies and Shattering Glass.

In the ninth grade class chapters 21-24 are due Tuesday from Shattering Glass and 25-28 are due Thursday. Frida, Marlas Jackson will be working with the students on their quilt pieces based on Richard Wright's haikus.

Since some students were gone to the Brown Museum and others will be gone to Brown this week and some students were in and out of some classes last week due to Lied music performance, we are all at slightly different places, but we are working to get to the same place.

No date set for research paper as I want to allow needed time for me to teach what is needed, etc. However, the due date will undoubtedly be around Feb 28 - early March. I'll set for sure as soon as I feel we are far enough along.

Monday - All classes know that they should have an approved thesis sentence by Friday 2/19 (100 pts. yellow, pg 18-19).

All classes know, they should be hand writing their entries for the Reference / Bibliography page. Directions are the salmon pages. Write on pages 27-28 so it will be easier to type. page 30 has directions for setting a hanging indent.

Most classes have reviewed some papers in Appendix C from past years and were assigned to grade pages 5 and 15.

Wednesday - Reviewing more papers as needed and blue pages handed out for the outline of the paper. Time in class to work!!!

Thursday - I will be on field trip so lesson plans similar to Wed. will be left for the sub. Students on the trip may want to take a sack lunch for when they return from Topeka. Take a pencil on the trip! We leave between 8:15-8:30 and return around noon.
